Born a Russian prince, Peter Kropotkin — rejected his title and wealth to spend his life in pursuit of social justice and equality. His last major work, The Conquest of Bread, surveys economic methods for the satisfaction of human needs.

Kropotkin criticizes the effects of feudalism and capitalism, noting that both systems exacerbate poverty and promote privilege, even in times of abundance. Citing the human propensity toward voluntary cooperation, he proposes the establishment of free, self-sufficient anarchic communesand outlines practical considerations of production and distribution.
The author supports his theories with examples from the French rebellions of , , and , and his reasoning anticipates aspects of twentieth-century revolutions in Russia, Germany, and Spain. At a time when many thinkers employed the new Darwinian concept of "survival of the fittest" to justify their capitalist and imperialist goals, Kropotkin pointed out the historic patterns of humanity's best success under cooperative circumstances.
And it has this distinctive feature, that it brings within the domain of Art — the poem, the novel,. While the high quality of all his work makes it hard to say whether this classic can be considered his best, it is fair to say that it is probably his most famous and one of his most widely read.
Suffice to say, that it is rarely out of print testifies to its importance as well as the quality and timelessness of its message. It is often called an anarchist classic. This is not entirely accurate. Yes, it is a classic and it was written by an anarchist, indeed the leading anarchist thinker of the time.
However, it is not a book about anarchism. Far from it! The very mode of analysis, the looking into mutual aid tendencies of everyday life is inherently libertarian. More than that, it is documented with the skill of a talented scientist and, in this, it is somewhat unusual. It is often noted that Proudhon, the founding father of anarchism, was unique in being a socialist thinker who was also working class. In the case of Kropotkin, he was one of the few socialist thinkers who was a trained scientist, an extremely gifted one according to his peers.
This education in the scientific method can be seen from all his work, but most obviously in Mutual Aid. A passage from the book One of the current objections to Communism, and Socialism altogether, is that the idea is so old, and yet it has never been realized. Schemes of ideal States haunted the thinkers of Ancient Greece; later on, the early Christians joined in communist groups; centuries later, large communist brotherhoods came into existence during the Reform movement. Then, the same ideals were revived during the great English and French Revolutions; and finally, quite lately, in , a revolution, inspired to a great extent with Socialist ideals, took place in France. Don't you think that there is some fundamental error in your understanding of human nature and its needs?
However, the moment we consider human history more attentively, it loses its strength. We see, first, that hundreds of millions of men have succeeded in maintaining amongst themselves, in their village communities, for many hundreds of years, one of the main elements of Socialism-the common ownership of the chief instrument of production, the land, and the apportionment of the same according to the labour capacities of the different families. Petersburg, Petersburg University Aide-de-Camp to military Governor of Transbaikalia. People also remember the political war, and the political angels: Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, those people -- those who say that the only possible choice is between elitist-centralized government and mob majority rule. Virtually never are we presented with a Door Number Three option: the dark horse philosophy of the poorly-named "anarchism", and its leading evangelist, Emma Goldman.
Goldman led a fascinating life and spent her years exploring philosophical options for how human beings might live. At one point exiled to Ru ssia, where she got an up-close exposure to how communism really worked in practice, Goldman ultimately realized that, as Thomas Jefferson once quipped, "The best government is self-government", and that is the basis for anarchism, which might just as well or actually better termed something like "autonomism" or "individualism". At any rate, this is a good book, well worth reading.
